A tiny humble little
fishing village was transformed into a major port and industrial centre by a quirk of
fate. The village became a part of the
powerful Kalinga Empire that was conquered by the Emperor Ashoka in 260 BC. The decline of
the Mauryan Empire saw it pass into the hands of the Andhra kings. In the 15th century,
Vishakhapatnam became a part of the grand Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar. But it was the
British who realised its true potential and developed it into the bustling, busy harbour
and port city that it is today. Modern Vizag has Indias largest shipbuilding yard,
Indias most powerful lighthouse, a really long length of tarred road snaking along
the eastern coast of India and what is claimed to be the worlds highest broad gauge
railway track.
While
no great shakes as a purely tourist destination, it does attract business visitors.
